Christmas Post

A Dramatic Musical by Deborah Craig-Claar and Robert Sterling

Just imagine… if a Norman Rockwell painting came to life and you could see the wonderful world of ordinary Americans that he created for us on each cover of The Saturday Evening Post.  The Christmas Post is a fast, fun-filled musical comedy that does just that.  From the moment the lights come up on Rockwell’s depiction of Hattie McGee’s news hut on a snowy Christmas Eve in 1947, until the curtain falls later that afternoon on the exhausted Alice Garfield, The Christmas Post takes you into Rockwell’s world of everyday people – just like you and me.  More importantly, we share a journey into faith rediscovered and are reminded just what Christmas is all about.

Members of the Vicksburg-Warren County area are presenting The Christmas Post at Hawkins United Methodist Church, 3735 Halls Ferry Road in Vicksburg, MS on Friday, December 11 and Saturday, December 12, 2015 at 7:00 pm with a Sunday matinee at 2:00 pm on December 13, 2015.  A change from the usual holiday production, this musical shares the story of Alice Garfield, a young WW2 widow who takes a second job at Herzog’s Department store to help buy her children that one special Christmas present.  Amid the commercialism of the season she learns a few lessons of faith from an unlikely person, Hattie McGee - a newsstand lady with angelical powers.

This is a FREE, family-oriented show that you are sure to enjoy.  But underneath it all is the consistent message that faith in Christ is what makes Christmas real.  May this be a Christmas of renewed faith – for all of us.

  Norman Rockwell

The production brings to life two of Norman Rockwell’s famous covers of The Saturday Evening Post:  Hattie McGee’s newsstand (1941) and an exhausted Alice Garfield at the end of a busy Christmas shopping day (1947).

 Synopsis of the play:

It’s early on Christmas Eve, 1947, in mythical Homesboro, Indiana.  Hattie McGee’s newsies are hawking the morning edition of The Christmas Post and Herzog’s Department Store is about to open.  Maxwell Seldon, sales manager, is bracing for his biggest sales day ever.  Elliot Herzog, Jr., owner of Herzog’s, can smell money in the air.  Bother Sam and his carolers from the tiny Central Avenue Church are hoping for enough donations to keep their soup kitchen open.  And Alice Garfield is on a collision course with a disaster.  A young WWII widow whose faith and pocketbook are both stretched to the limit, Alice is desperately trying to find “a little more Christmas” as a commission salesperson at Herzog’s this Christmas season.  (Unbeknownst to Alice, her daughter, Katie, is secretly attempting to find “a little more Christmas” for her mother by working in disguise as one of Hattie’s newsies.)  However, as the day goes on, Alice finds herself short of the funds needed for that one special present for each of her two children.

Then in a good-hearted attempt to help a late-arriving customer, Alice re-opens the store - only to have an uncontrollable mob of shoppers suddenly and disastrously descend on her from everywhere.  When the dust settles, Alice has lost her job, all of her Christmas earnings and is struggling with the last bit of faith she has left. But a last minute “miracle” helps Alice recognize that she has been focusing on her problems instead of God’s promises.  As the last strains of music close the show, Alice rediscovers that faith in Jesus is the true key to believing in Christmas and to finding happiness in life.
